Regulation (2017)

Premiered by soprano Juliet Fraser, Ensemble Multilatérale, and conductor Léo Warynski at Royaumont Abbey.

Regulation for soprano and instrumental sextet, is a sonic archive of three distinct musical entities imagined as listening situations: the glissando, the modulated instrument, and the audio representation of a collective social experience.

The glissando is archived as a situation of perpetual change. The modulated instrument is archived as a situation where its resistance is witnessed as its identity. Lastly, the audio recording of modern-day audience behavior outside of western classical tradition, itself the trace of an Internet archive, is re-archived as musical material digitally manipulated by the glissando and filtered acoustically by modulated instruments.
