The title, flieht wie ein Schatten, comes from the second half of Martin Luther’s German translation of Job 14:2. In English, the full verse reads, “They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.”

This piece is the second work of a series that explores the transmutability of sonic identities through the manipulation of modular rhythmic structures. To clarify, a sonic identity is defined by its point-in-time, its timbral features, and the optimal duration for the full perception of its unmistakable character. This work represents an effort to examine the compositional process in the hopes of encountering a renewed listening experience.
